The second annual BME Awards Banquet was held at the Doubletree Guest Suites Houston Room to an on-looking fresh crowd of graduate student recruits.

Undergraduate Advisors, Rudy Ortiz and Cindy Zimmerman, were each awarded the Texas Exes' James W. Vick Award for Academic Advising.

March 3, 2005 - This week the web site for Elsevier lists the top 25 hottest articles on ScienceDirect.

Christine Schmidt, an Associate Professor in Biomedical Engineering, was the featured speaker in the "Frontiers in Interdisciplinary Biosciences" Distinguished Lecture Series at Stanford University. She spoke on "Engineering Strategies for Functional Nerve Repair."

Professor George Georgiou, Joe C. Walter Jr. Endowed Chair in Biomedical Engineering, was recently elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) in Washington D.C. He was cited for his seminal contributions to protein engineering, especially the development of therapeutics to biological warfare agents, protein manufacturing technologies, and combinatorial library screening methodologies.

Nicholas A Peppas, the Fletcher Stuckey Pratt Professor of Biomedical Engineering, was awarded the 2005 Distinguished Scientist Award from the Houston Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology (HSEMB).

Patrick Stokes, junior in Biomedical Engineering, has been selected for the Washington Internships for Students of Engineering Program ( http://www.wise-intern.org/index.html).

Dr. Jeanne Stachowiak, formerly a senior researcher with Sandia Laboratories, has joined The University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Stachowiak is a leading biomedical researcher whose work has already received recognition.

Shanique Roberson, an undergraduate researcher in Dr. Muhammad H. Zaman's Laboratory for Molecular and Cellular Dynamics, recently won 1st place in the "Undergraduate Students in Technical Research" competition at the NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) fall regional conference.

Michelle Kim is the recipient of a BMES Undergraduate Research Award for 2006.
