Aislinn Hurley, a senior biomedical engineering student, has been awarded a 2022 Optics and Photonics Education Scholarship from the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) for her potential contributions to the field of optics, photonics or related field.

Hurley works in the Biophotonics Laboratory under the supervision of Dr. James Tunnell. Her work focuses on advancing spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) for medical applications such as skin-cancer detection. Her research interests include combining optics, image processing, and artificial intelligence to improve medical imaging techniques and patient outcomes.

The scholarship will provide Hurley with $4,000. She is one of 78 outstanding SPIE student members to receive support from SPIE, which is awarding $293,000 in educational scholarships in 2022.
