Professor Andrew Dunn will serve as interim chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, effective July 1, 2022. Dunn holds the Edward S. Hyman Endowed Chair in Engineering and is the director of the Center for Emerging Imaging Technologies as well as the department’s graduate advisor.

Dunn fills a vacancy created by the resignation of Shelly Sakiyama-Elbert, who served as chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering for six years, beginning in 2016.

Sakiyama-Elbert has taken a position as vice dean for research and graduate education at the University of Washington School of Medicine. During her tenure she hired nine faculty, launched the Clinical Innovation and Design Program with Dell Medical School, and worked to build an inclusive enviroment through mentoring programs for faculty and students, among other accomplishments.

Dunn previously served as interim chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering in 2015-2016. He joined The University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor of biomedical engineering in 2005.
