February 16, 2007 - Three University of Texas Biomedical Engineering Department faculty members were honored with awards recently at the 24th Annual meeting of the Houston Society for Engineering in Medicine and Biology (HSEMB).

Dr. Krishnendu Roy received the HSEMB Young Investigator Award. Sponsored by Millar Instruments, this award consists of a plaque and a check for $1,000. Dr. Roy was recognized for "pioneering contributions in the fields of biomaterials science and gene therapy". Previous recipients of this prestigious award have included Rebecca Richards-Kortum (1993, now at Rice), Tony Mikos (1994, Rice), Gerald Coté (1995, Texas A&M), Jennifer West (1998, a UT graduate, now at Rice), our own Dr. Charles Patrick in 1999, Mike Pishko (2000, a UT graduate, then at Texas A&M and now at Penn State), Rebekah Drezek (2003, a UT graduate, now at Rice) and Richard Neptune (2006, UT ME).

Dr. Mia Markey was the recipient of the first J.A. Halter Award in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. This a new award which consists of a plaque and a check for $500. Mia was recognized for significant early contributions to bioinformatics and biomedical computing.

Finally, our colleague Dr. Mauro Ferrari, Interim Deputy Chair of BME at the UT Health Science Center in Houston, gave the plenary lecture on "Perspectives on Medical Nanotechnology".
