Seminar Abstract

The mission of the Stanford Biomedical Optics Group (SBOg) is to develop novel tools for optical imaging and sensing and to deploy such tools to address clinical needs and aid in scientific discovery. Building on their expertise in interferometry, the group aims to create innovative technologies that serve as integral complements to the toolkits of biologists and clinicians, as well as use their own technologies to study various cellular phenomena relevant to disease. The focus of this talk will be on new studies and design schemes for optical coherence tomography (OCT), a non-ionizing high resolution imaging modality whose rapid success in ophthalmology is leading to broad interest in the technique for in vivo imaging in many clinical applications. SBOg aims to develop new designs to tackle many items on the OCT wish list (e.g., high resolution, high speed, large dynamic range, large field of view) by taking a systematic approach to understanding the fundamental limitations of existing designs and enlisting creative strategies to improve them by orders of magnitude. To date their work has, for example, resulted in new systems capable of 10 to 100-fold increases in imaging speed and 10-fold increases in ranging depth. Such extended functionality will enable new applications, particularly for imaging dynamic cellular processes.
