The Cockrell School of Engineering has honored Professor Christine E. Schmidt as a Distinguished Engineering Graduate, the highest honor bestowed on alumni.
Recipients are graduates of the Cockrell School who have presented themselves to the world as consummate professionals, dedicated engineers, and strong supporters of engineering education.
Schmidt joined The University of Texas at Austin in 1996 and is currently the B.F. Goodrich Endowed Professor in Materials Engineering in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering. She is known for her pioneering work in the areas of tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and biomaterials. Her research focuses on engineering novel therapeutic devices to stimulate damaged peripheral and spinal neurons to regenerate.
Schmidt has mentored hundreds of undergraduates, 35 graduate students, and 5 postdoctoral fellows and has published over 80 articles in journals such as Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Lab on a Chip, and Biomaterials. She earned her B.S. in chemical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin and her Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
Schmidt will be honored at ceremony that coincides with graduation festivities in May 2012.
