On the occasion of the celebration of the Silver Jubilee of the journal "Biomaterials", its publisher "Elsevier" recognized the top 25 papers published during these last 25 years. One among these top 25 papers cited was the work of UT BME professors Lisa Brannon-Peppas and Nicholas Peppas on "pH-sensitive hydrogels containing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate" that was first published in "Biomaterials" in November 1990 (11:635-644). This was one of the earliest studies on pH-sensitive biomaterials and opened the field of externally-triggered delivery systems and pH-responsive biosensors.

These 25 influential biomaterials papers were published in a commemorative book to be first displayed at the Annual Meeting of The Society for Biomaterials in Pittsburgh in April 2006.
