Mia K. Markey received the 2015 Duke University Distinguished Young Alumnus Award on April 24, 2015. The award recognizes Markey, who graduated with a Ph.D. in bioengineering in 2002 from Duke University, for her mission to develop decision support systems for clinical decision-making and scientific discovery.

Under her direction, students in the Biomedical Informatics Lab (BMIL) have used artificial intelligence and signal processing technologies to design cost-effective computational decision aids. Recent BMIL projects include computational decision aids for interpreting biomedical spectra and images, biometrics for 3D face recognition, and computational methods for identifying biomarkers from genomic and proteomic analyses.
An American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellow, Markey has been recognized with the Society for Women's Health Research Medtronic Prize, a Coulter Foundation Award for Early Career Achievements in Translational Research, as well as major research awards from the National Institutes of Health. She most recently received the American Society for Engineering Education Sharon Keillor Award for Women in Engineering.
