Swetha Maddipudi, a senior undergraduate student in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, has been selected as a 2018 Outstanding Student Award Finalist by the Texas Parents Association.

Every year, the Texas Parents Association recognizes six students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, scholarship, character and service.

During her time at UT Austin, Maddipudi coordinated the clinic volunteer program at University Health Services, which she says helped get her out of the student bubble and tune into health with a student population. She also found her experience with Orange Jackets rewarding. Both of these helped her develop professional skills.

Within the BME department, she conducted research in the Laboratory for Cardiovascular Engineering & Therapeutics with Professor Aaron Baker on a wound healing project. She also worked with Professor Marissa Nichole Rylander on cancer microenvironments in the Tissue Engineering, Nanotechnology, and Cancer Research (TENCR) Lab.

Her extensive BME undergraduate involvement includes serving as a learning and teaching assistant, as well as participation in the Biomedical Engineering Mental Health Initiative, Women in Biomedical Engineering, and the Biomedical Engineering Honor Society.

After graduation, Maddipudi plans to attend medical school at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio to pursue a career as a pediatrician.
