The Department of Biomedical Engineering has appointed Dr. Ali Khademhosseini as an adjunct professor for the 2012–2013 academic year.
Khademhosseini, an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School who holds additional appointments at the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences Technology and at Brigham & Women’s Hospital, was a Donald D. Harrington Fellow and visiting scholar to The University of Texas at Austin during the fall 2011 semester.
As a Harrington Fellow, he formed collaborations with faculty and students in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and hosted a Harrington Symposium that brought in health care scholars from across the country. His appointment as an adjunct professor will allow him to continue interacting with the department and teach special lectures in biomedical engineering classes.
Khademhosseini’s research focuses on innovations in biomaterials and regenerative medicine, including engineering artificial tissue and organs for patients who would otherwise require transplants. He has developed pioneering approaches for combining micro/nanofabrication with various polymeric materials to generate cell-containing gels of controlled shapes that can be used to create biomimetic structures for engineering artificial tissues.
