David Hormuth, a postdoctoral researcher who works with Professor Thomas Yankeelov in the Center for Computational Oncology (CCO) has received a grant from the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

 

The one-year early career grant will provide seed funding for Hormuth to develop his project called “Development and validation of computational and experimental framework for predicting radiation therapy outcomes.”

The goal of the research is to expand on the CCO’s recent research published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology on modeling response to radiation therapy, which used diffusion weighted MRI (DW-MRI) to initialize and calibrate a biophysical model of tumor cell response to whole brain radiation therapy.

Hormuth and the CCO are hoping to expand on the introduction of additional imaging measures to quantify tumor vasculature, a model selection component that would identify the most appropriate model for an individual subject, and using models to identify an individual’s specific radiosensitivity. They will apply their technique to data collected from a pre-clinical model of glioblastoma receiving relevant doses of radiation.
