Dr. Mia K. Markey recently received a Carnegie Mellon Recent Alumni Award for 2007. This award is "for exemplary achievement in one's chosen occupation, or for outstanding service to the university during one's first 10 years as a member of the Carnegie Mellon alumni community".

Dr. Markey and her daughter, Fiona Markey, also enjoyed meeting the Carnegie Mellon bagpiper, Patrick Regan. Mr. Regan (a UT alum himself) played "The Eyes of Texas" on his bagpipes for them.

The Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association presents no more than two Recent Alumni Awards (formerly the Young Alumni Awards) each year. Both undergraduate and graduate degreed alumni are eligible for this award. Dr. Markey earned her B.S. Degree from Carnegie Mellon in Computational Biology in 1998.
