The American Heart Association has awarded Rachel Buchanan, a graduate student working with Professor Michael Sacks in the Center for Cardiovascular Simulation, with a 2013 Predoctoral Fellowship. The two-year, $50,000 fellowship will fund Buchanan's cardiovascular research.

Specifically, Buchanan's research focuses on determining if mechanical stresses in aortic valve cells lead to valve dysfunction and disease. She will use computational and biological methods to better understand the connections between changes in mechanical forces that modulate biosynthetic activity in aortic cells and calcification of the aortic valve.
