Ashvin Bashyam, a junior working with Geoffrey Luke, a graduate student in Professor Stanislav Emelianov’s Ultrasound Imaging and Therapeutics Research Laboratory, received the $2,000 second place award at the second annual Notre Dame Competition in Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, and Campus Tour (NDConnect).
Ashvin Bashyam, a junior working with Geoffrey Luke, a graduate student in Professor Stanislav Emelianov’s Ultrasound Imaging and Therapeutics Research Laboratory, received the $2,000 second place award at the second annual Notre Dame Competition in Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, and Campus Tour (NDConnect).
Bashyam won for his work using silica-coated gold nanoparticles to noninvasively detect sentinel lymph nodes, which are thought to be early signs of cancer metastasis. The gold nanoparticles are used as contrast agents for ultrasound-guided photoacoustic imaging.
The competition began with roughly 50 undergraduate students from across the U.S., with students initially submitting project proposals and project presentations. Eight finalists were selected to present posters in the final round of competition at the University of Notre Dame on October 5, 2012.
Other finalists were from University of California-Berkeley, University of Delaware, University of Minnesota, The Ohio State University, and University of Tennessee.
