Dissertation Proposal & Applying for Candidacy

Instructions:

  1. Select your dissertation committee. Work with your supervisor and select your committee following Graduate School guidelines.
  2. Complete the BME Dissertation Proposal form after arranging a date to give your proposal. Give your tentative Dissertation title and a brief description/abstract. Save the abstract description for your records as you will need it for your online application for candidacy. All members of your dissertation committee will need to sign the form.
  3. Complete the BME Grad Learning Outcomes form for each member of your committee. Complete the top portion of the form with your name, the date of your exam, and the professor's name. On the date of your proposal, give each of your committee members their Learning Outcomes form in an envelope, so that they may signa and seal it and return it to you or to the Graduate Coordinator directly. Visit the Graduate Coordinator's office if you need envelopes.
  4. Complete the Ph.D. Degree Audit/Program of Work form and give to the Graduate Coordinator. This form does not require the Graduate Advisor's signature.
  5. After you have submitted these forms, proceed to the Graduate School's online Application for Candidacy.

Once you have submitted the candidacy application, it will be electronically routed to your supervisor, to Dr. Andy Dunn and Dr. Pengyu Ren, and to the Graduate School for approval. Upon the Graduate School's approval, you will be able to register for the Dissertation Course. You may take the course during the same semester that you advance to candidacy or the following semester. The Dissertation R course should be taken once (example: BME 999R), followed by the Disseration W course (example: BME 399W). The Disseration W course should be repeated until you graduate. You must maintain continuous enrollment in the Dissertation Course once you have advanced to candidacy.
