Since 1969, The University of Texas at Austin has prepared biomedical engineering M.S. and Ph.D. students to take positions within academia, the health care field, and industry. The Department of Biomedical Engineering’s nationally recognized faculty are developing or have already attained leading positions in areas such as treatment of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, orthopedic disorders, and eye diseases, as well as in the fields of tissue replacement, imaging and diagnostics, biomaterials, drug delivery, bioinformatics, and systems biology.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering offers the following graduate programs:

• Ph.D. Program (four to six years for completion)
• M.S Program (two years for completion)
• M.D./Ph.D. Program (six to seven years for completion)

With an accomplished faculty and diverse student body, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin offers opportunities for students to grow and build interdisciplinary knowledge in the areas of medicine, molecular and cellular biology, and engineering. The department has over 60 Graduate Studies Committee program faculty working in diverse areas of biomedical engineering and related areas.

Our program currently has approximately 110 graduate students with backgrounds in biology, chemistry, physics, and various engineering disciplines. Students come from all over the United States and the world to gain unique knowledge and experience. Apart from research work in some of the world's premier research labs, there are numerous opportunities for personal and professional developments through industrial and medical school interactions, conference attendances, biomedical engineering seminar series with leaders in the field, and networking opportunities with some of the top minds in the biomedical engineering.

Doctoral students are given full financial support, whether as a Teaching Assistant, Graduate Research Assistant, or through one of the many fellowships available to students. More than half of our graduate students have fellowships.
