Clinical Internships

STEP-UP Program at MD Anderson

The STEP-UP program is a comprehensive summer internship for biomedical engineering students interested in translational clinical (“bench-side to bedside”) research as well as hands on clinical experience. Summer 2008 will be the fifth year UT BME students have participated in this ten week summer program at M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. Students will:

  • Receive certification in HIPAA, CPR, and Advanced First Aid
  • Attend noon seminars (lunch provided) in leadership, lab safety, ethics, and clinical etiquette
  • Participate in an 80-hour dissection-based human anatomy course
  • Observe rotations through a variety of medical clinics
  • Research with MD Anderson and UTHSC-H doctors in a supervised laboratory research experience
  • Present posters at the end of summer awards dinner

UT-Austin students must register for BME 377P (Clinical Research Internship) and BME 377Q (Clinical Medical Internship). Students enrolled in the STEP-UP internship program will earn a $1,000 stipend. Scrubs, lab coats, textbooks, and lab supplies will be provided free of charge. All students will be housed in a Rice University Residential Hall. Parking and meal tickets are available at additional cost. Students must provide their own laptop computers, food, and linens. The Rice dorms are within easy walking distance of most Texas Medical Center training sites, and shuttles run regularly between Rice and nearby hospitals, clinics, and laboratories.

The Brackenridge/UT Medical Branch/BME Summer Program

This five week program will feature four weeks in Austin and one week in Galveston. During the weeks in Austin students will be partnered with two third and fourth year medical students, each for a two week rotation. The BME student will attend seminars with their medical student, accompany them on rounds and help with treatment plans.

In addition to working with the medical students, BME students will have a series of talks on a variety of medical specialties hosted by Dr. David Weigle, Senior Medical Educator. Dr. Tate Erlinger, Director of Clinical Research and Development will lead the BME students in a series of talks on Quality Assurance in medicine that will culminate in a technical poster presentation by teams of two students offering their suggestion for a quality assurance or improvement.

For week three, Biomedical Engineering students will be transported by van to the UT Medical Branch in Galveston and housed in Galveston in a local hotel. During this week long medical school preview, students will participate in problem-based learning sessions, “Standardized Patient” and the patient simulation center. Sessions will also include exposure to the Robotic surgery department and the Center for Biomedical Engineering.

Students must enroll in BME 377M (which may be used as a senior elective class) to participate in the Brackenridge summer internship. There is no stipend for the program. Transportation and housing in Galveston are included in the program.
