Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. Biomedical engineering is a fast growing and exciting field of professionals dedicated to responding to societal needs. Our department is committed to educating the next generation of biomedical engineering leaders who will improve our quality of life.
We became a full-fledged academic department in 2001, and since that time, we have seen a steady number of successes. In 2008 we built a state-of-the-art, architecturally pleasing and environmentally sound facility for our promising students to participate in revolutionary research. In 2010, we were named one of the five largest departments in the country as well as one of the five most productive departments in research publications. Additionally, we hosted the annual Biomedical Engineering Society Meeting—the largest and most prestigious gathering of biomedical engineering leaders in the country.
We attribute our successes to our outstanding faculty members whose efforts in cancer detection and treatment, cardiovascular research, and enhancements in nerve regeneration and drug delivery have been recognized with awards from distinguished organizations such as the Institute of Medicine, National Academy of Engineering, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, the Coulter Foundation, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, among many others.
In addition to being recognized for their innovations in this field, our professors’ are focused on inspiring and instilling knowledge in the future forerunners of biomedical engineering.
