UT Austin Department of Biomedical Engineering Chair Tyrone Porter, Ph.D., spoke at the 2023 Rising Scholars Conference hosted by the University of Minnesota Biomedical Engineering Department about his life and academic career as an underrepresented minority.

The event gave participants the opportunity to learn from faculty and from each other about pathways to professional success and reward in academic careers.

Faculty and career sponsors from partnering institutions, including UT Austin, were on-site to answer questions about academic careers in biomedical engineering. Networking events and poster sessions provided additional time for faculty-scholar interactions across a broad range of biomedical engineering departments and universities.

In his talk as a plenary speaker, Prof. Porter shared his perspective as a Black scientist from graduate student to tenured faculty member.

Since academia can be challenging yet extremely rewarding and fulfilling, Prof. Porter described how there are no real secrets to success. He says it all comes down to recognizing the system for what it is and making the system work for you.
