Abstract:

Research about and preparation for testing of an Intracortical Visual Prosthesis has been pursued since the early 1970s.  Started as an intramural project within the NIH Neural Prosthesis Program, the NIH performed a single-subject human trial before shifting all activities to extramural funding in the late 1990s. The current ICVP project emerged in 2000 with a team that consists of prior NIH intramural researchers as part of an eight-member institutional research group funded under the BRAIN Initiative to test the ICVP concept in a clinical trial. After completing a preclinical phase, and with approvals in place from the FDA, IRB, and NIH, the clinical trial phase of the ICVP project began on September 1, 2020, with a goal of testing the ICVP in five volunteers.  This seminar will present the ICVP technology, preclinical work, and plans for the clinical trial.
