Bo Wang is a recipient of the Best Student Paper award at the 2008 IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium held Nov. 2-5, 2008 in Beijing, China. Bo has received this award for her presentation entitled “Design of Catheter for Combined Intravascular Photoacoustic and Ultrasound Imaging” co-authored by Bo Wang (presenter), Andrei Karpiouk, and Stanislav Emelianov. On October 24, 2008, Jignesh Shah successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis titled: "Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging to Guide and Monitor Photothermal Therapy" at The University of Texas at Austin. The examination committee consisted of Dr. Stanislav Emelianov (UT-Austin), Dr. Jonathan Valvano (UT-Austin), Dr. Salavat Aglyamov (UT-Austin), Dr. Thomas Milner (UT-Austin) and Dr. Konstantin Sokolov (UT-Austin). Jignesh will join Volcano Corporation as a Signal Processing Engineer on December 1, 2008.

On July 28 2008, Suhyun Park successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis titled: "Integrated System for Ultrasonic, Elasticity and Photoacoustic Imaging" at The University of Texas at Austin. Jignesh Shah, a PhD. candidate in Ultrasound Imaging and Therapeutics Research Laboratory, won first place at the "Interdisciplinary Perspectives: A Graduate Student Research Showcase" on April 18th 2008. Jignesh's talk was titled "Image guided photothermal cancer therapy." The presenters were graduate students from difference departments including Government, Sociology, Curriculum etc. and 10 papers were selected for oral presentation from the received abstracts including 2 panel discussions.

Srivalleesha Mallidi, a PhD. candidate in Ultrasound Imaging and Therapeutics Research Laboratory, was awarded the "Innovation Grand Prize" for her research "Molecular Specific Photoacoustic Imaging using Plasmonic Gold Nanoparticles" that is given to the most innovative research at the fourth annual Graduate and Industry Networking (GAIN) 2008 conference as determined by the Chair of Free Enterprise. She was selected from more than 100 graduate students participating in GAIN 2008.
On July 17 2007, Shriram Sethuraman successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis titled: "Combined Intravascular Ultrasound and Photoacoustic Imaging" at The University of Texas at Austin. The examination committee consisted of Dr. Stanislav Emelianov (UT-Austin), Dr. Richard Smalling (UT-Medical School, Houston), Dr. Salavat Aglyamov (UT-Austin), Dr. Thomas Milner (UT-Austin) and Dr. Xiaojing Zhang (UT-Austin). Shriram will join Philips Research North America as a Senior Member Research Staff in the Ultrasound Imaging and Therapy Department in Fall 2007.
Suhyun Park, a PhD. candidate in Ultrasound Imaging and Therapeutics Research Laboratory, has been selected as the recipient of the 2007-2008 Wendell Gordon Fellowship - one of the most competitive awards given by the Graduate School at the University of Texas at Austin.
