Graduate students from the Department of Biomedical Engineering won awards at the poster competition during Biomaterials Day at Texas A&M University on June 9, 2014. Eight finalists were chosen from around 60 poster presenters for rapid-fire presentations. Four of those finalists were from The University of Texas at Austin, including:

Subhamoy Das and Anthony Monteforte, both working with Professor Aaron Baker, and Lindsey Sharpe and Stephanie Steichen, both working in Professor Nicholas Peppas' lab.

Subhamoy Das took the First Place award for his presentation titled: Syndesome-Based Dressings For Enhanced Wound Healing In Diabetic Mice.

Lindsey Sharpe and Stephanie Steichen tied for Third Place for their presentations, titled Design and Characterization of a Dual-Release Oral Vaccine Platform and Development and Characterization of Surface Modified P(MAA-CO-NVP) Hydrogels for Oral Protein Delivery, respectively.

The Society for Biomaterials has initiated the Biomaterials Day Program, which provides financial support for a one-day symposium at five different locations throughout the United States. The purpose of these meetings is to highlight cutting-edge research and increase student interest in biomaterials careers.

The goal of the Texas Biomaterials Day is to enhance networking between academic and industrial sectors and increase student exposure to exciting biomaterials research. This one-day symposium features presentations from academic, clinical and industrial researchers that showcase ongoing research in the region and promote collaboration and knowledge exchange between institutions and industry. The day includes student poster sessions that provide a venue for student research presentations and networking.
