The American Institute of Chemical Engineers has recognized Professor Nicholas Peppas with its 2013 Nanoscale Science and Engineering Forum Award for his achievement in science, impact in education, and commitment to professional service.

"Peppas exquisitely fuses modern molecular and cell biology with materials engineering to generate new systems and devices, including uses of nanomaterials for novel treatments for human disease, which have benefited millions worldwide," said one of Peppas' nominators, Dr. Joseph DeSimone, Director of the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise and the Chancellor's Eminent Professor of Chemistry at the University of North Carolina.

"Peppas is the pioneer in rational drug delivery systems, having laid the theoretical foundation for all that would come in the field broadly," DeSimone said. "He has revolutionized this field—he has created it—with his equations having become the basis of the advances that have occurred over the past several decades."

As part of the award, Nicholas Peppas will give a lecture at a dedicated plenary session Monday, November 4, 2013 at 3:15pm in the Continental 2 Room at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square.

Peppas' presentation entitled, Emerging Frontiers in Rational Design and Application of Nanotechnology in Medicine, will address the molecular design of intelligent nanoscale materials by controlling recognition and specificity. It will examine nanoscale technologies towards the preparation of targeted formulations for protein delivery to specific sites, use of environmentally-responsive polymers to achieve pH- or temperature-triggered delivery, usually in modulated mode, and improvement of the behavior of their mucoadhesive behavior and cell recognition.

Peppas, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, has been recognized with a number of prestigious awards, including, most recently the National Academy of Engineering's Founders Award and the American Society for Engineering Education Excellence in Engineering Education Award.
