BME Undergraduate Program Receives ABET Accreditation

The undergraduate program in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin is now fully accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). "This is a major milestone for our department. Once the first baccalaureate BME class graduated, we applied for accreditation. Now every student from our first two graduating classes is documented as having graduated from an accredited BME program," stated Professor Ken Diller, Chairman of the BME Department.

ABET dates back to 1932 and currently accredits 2,700 programs at more than 550 colleges and universities nationwide. Their accreditation assessment methods strive to measure what is learned rather than what is taught. ABET enables innovation and encourages implementation of new teaching and knowledge assessment methods that lead to continuous program improvement.
