$2.3 million NIH grant

On 2-16-06 Dr. Grady Rylander and Dr. Tom Milner received a 5 yr $2.3 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Eye Institute, for glaucoma and related neurodegenerative research. The broad, long-term objective of the proposed research is the laboratory and clinical demonstration of a noninvasive imaging technique to characterize changes in the neurotubules of retinal ganglion cell axons which are associated with the onset and progression of glaucoma. Neurotubules are intracellular organelles important for the transport of proteins in the axons and are sensitive to oxidative stress and ischemia. The research will test the hypothesis that neurotubule density measured with polarization-sensitive OCT is an indicator of neuron health and a predictor of vision loss in glaucoma. The study will develop a non-invasive imaging platform for assessing the efficacy of neuroprotective drugs.
