The University of Texas at Austin
College of Engineering
Department Overview

From a Program to a Department

Biomedical Engineering has been a program within the College of Engineering since 1969. Since that time, numerous PhD and Master's students have gone on to take positions within academic institutions and in industry. In Fall 2001, BME became a full academic department and will offer degrees at both the graduate and undergraduate (beginning Fall 2002) level. The expansion of this program will allow students and faculty to work together extensively to build interdisciplinary knowledge in the areas of medicine, molecular and cellular biology and engineering.

In order to support the goals of the department, three new staff were hired and several new faculty will be joining us in the upcoming months to enhance the breadth of research already taking place in numerous research labs across the UT Austin campus and the Texas Medical Center in Houston. In addition, these new faculty will support undergraduate education by teaching courses in a diverse undergraduate curriculum.
