Application Criteria
The deadlines for applying to the BME Program are:
- October 1st for Spring admission
- December 15th for Fall admission
For more information on the application process, please see here.
Chances of admission are difficult to predict. The BME faculty admission committee makes final decisions on all applications and does not determine admittance based only upon GRE scores and GPA numbers. The committee reviews each student's entire application package: the GPA, GRE scores, TOEFL score, letters of recommendation, personal statement, department application and resume including previous research or work experience. All applications are then considered in the context of the space and financial resourses available for accommodating new students in a particular year.
The faculty will not decide or predict anyone's admittance until receiving and reviewing all application materials.
Regarding scores: The BME faculty admissions committee likes to see, approximately, a GPA of at least 3.5 in upper-division undergraduate coursework and a minimum GPA of 3.2 total cumulative. For graduate coursework, a total cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 is desireable. Desireable GRE scores are: verbal=600, quantitative=700, analytical=600 (old GRE) or 5.0 (new GRE). Again, keep in mind that admissions decisions are not based entirely upon the GPA or GRE scores.
In addition, prerequisite college-level courses include: two semesters of calculus-based physics, differential equations, statistics, chemistry, biology (cell or molecular), and physiology. After these courses are completed, then your application package can be considered for admission into our program.
Ph.D. Applicants
Applicants should possess a BS or BA degree in an area compatible with our program. All Ph.D. applicants will be required to complete 36 hours of coursework, pass the qualifying exams, and present a written and oral dissertation to a faculty committee. Students admitted to the PhD program will receive financial support in the form of a Research Assistantship to a supervising professor. In addition, all Ph.D. students are required to serve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for two semesters during their studies here at UT.
If you do not possess a Master of Science (MS) degree in a field compatible with our program, you will be officially classified as an "MS" student until the successful completion of required courses. You have the option to seek an MS degree on route to obtaining a Ph.D. degree, but this is not required unless recommended by your supervisor or dissertation committee.
If you possess an MS degree already, then some of the courses from your MS curriculum may count toward the 24 hours of courses required of all Ph.D. students. Students possessing an MS degree already are typically classified as Ph.D. students at the onset, although they still must meet the coursework and Ph.D. Qualifying requirements. Degree plans must be approved by the BME Graduate Adviser and the BME Graduate Studies Committee.
Master Degree Applicants
Applicants should possess a BS or BA degree in an area compatible with our program. Time for degree completion is approximately two years based on a typical courseload of nine credit hours per spring and fall semesters. Master Degree students are not guaranteed financial support. However, some supervisors may choose to support MS students at their own discretion.
