Admission Criteria for Both Ph.D. and M.S. Programs
Chances of admission are difficult to predict. The BME faculty Admissions Committee makes final decisions on all applications and does not determine admittance based only upon GRE scores and GPA numbers. The committee reviews each student's entire application package: the GPA, GRE scores, TOEFL score (if required), letters of recommendation, personal statement, department application, and résumé including previous research or work experience. All applications are considered in the context of the laboratory space and financial recourses available for accommodating new students each year.
The Admissions Committee will not decide or predict admittance until receiving and reviewing all application materials.
GPA: The BME Admissions Committee likes to see a GPA of at least 3.5 in upper-division undergraduate coursework and a minimum GPA of 3.2 total cumulative on a 4.0 scale. For graduate coursework, a total cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 is desirable.
GRE Test Scores: Desirable GRE scores are: Verbal ≥600; Quantitative ≥700; and Analytical ≥5.0 (new GRE) or ≥600 (old GRE). Again, keep in mind that admissions decisions are not based entirely upon the GPA or GRE scores.
Recommended Prerequisite College-level Courses: Two semesters of calculus-based physics, differential equations, statistics, chemistry, biology (cell or molecular), and physiology. Although not all of these courses are required for admission, application will be more competitive with all of these courses.
Ph.D. Applicants
Application Deadlines:
- December 1st for Fall admission – Recommended
- March 1st for Summer admission – Faculty Nomination Required
- October 1st for Spring admission – Faculty Nomination Required
Applicants should possess a B.S. or B.A. degree in an area compatible with our program; M.S. degree is not required. All Ph.D. applicants will be required to complete 24 hours of coursework, pass the qualifying exams, and present a written and oral dissertation to a faculty committee. Students admitted to the PhD program will receive financial support in the form of a Research Assistantship to a supervising professor. In addition, all Ph.D. students are required to serve as a Teaching Assistant (TA) for two semesters during their studies here at UT.
You have the option to seek an M.S. degree on route to obtaining a Ph.D. degree, but this is not required unless recommended by your supervisor or dissertation committee.
If you possess an M.S. degree already, some of the courses from your M.S. curriculum may count toward the 24 hours of courses required of all Ph.D. students. Degree plans must be approved by the BME Graduate Adviser and the BME Graduate Studies Committee.
M.S. Applicants
Application Deadline:
- December 1st for Fall admission only
M.S. Program does not accept applications for Summer or Spring admission.
Applicants should possess a B.S. or B.A. degree in an area compatible with our program. Time for degree completion is approximately two years based on a typical course load of nine credit hours per spring and fall semesters. M.S. students are not guaranteed financial support. However, some supervisors may choose to support M.S. students at their own discretion.
M.S. is a good option for preparation for an industry position, or if you are not sure about a Ph.D. program.
