Summer Opportunities for Research

Biomedical engineering offers a wide variety of Summer research opportunities for undergraduates. The most popular summer research opportunity is offered through a program called Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU’s). These nine and ten week programs are located at Universities and research facilities around the country. Mostly funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF) grants, researchers offer undergraduates the chance to work on projects with students from around the country. REUs provide students interested in Biomedical research and related areas a wonderful option to see another part of the country while participating in a meaningful summer research project. Most REUs include a stipend of $3000 - $5000 as well as help with travel and living expenses. Students may choose to receive credit, which may be used to fulfill a senior elective in their BME curriculum, by registering for BME 377R. Registration is not required except in cases where credit is desired. Students may not apply for credit retroactively by registering for the summer REU upon their return to UT in the fall.
