Freshman/New Transfer Student Advising Procedures
Every semester each student in BME is required to go through two types of advising:
- Faculty advising with an assigned BME faculty member. This advising is for non-class related advising; areas such as research, internships, and extracurricular activities are discussed during this time.
- Academic advising with one of the BME advisers (Cindy or Jeff). This advising is specifically for classes; what classes you need to take for next semester will be discussed during this time.
A registration bar is placed on all students at the beginning of each semester, and registration for classes is not possible until the bar has been lifted. Within the BME department, you must attend both types of advising before your bar will be removed for that semester. The details and procedures for each type of advising are listed below.
- Faculty Advising
- Each student is assigned a faculty adviser by the Undergraduate Advising Office, and the list is sent out through email and posted online. The current list for this semester can be found here.
- Sign up for an individual appointment with your assigned faculty adviser online at http://www.engr.utexas.edu/scheduler.
- Come by the UG Advising Office located in ENS 602E and pick up a faculty advising form outside in the hallway wall racks.
- Fill out the top part of the faculty advising form and take it with you to your appointment along with an updated resume. Don’t be late!
- Have your faculty adviser sign your form at the end of the session and return the completed and signed faculty advising form to the UG Advising Office.
- Academic Advising
- Every year either Cindy or Jeff will take on the responsibility of meeting with all the new students to BME, and this year it is Jeff.
- Sign up for an individual appointment with Jeff online at http://www.engr.utexas.edu/scheduler
- Attend your session with Jeff, make sure you’re not late!
Once you have successfully attended both advising sessions (faculty and academic) your registration bar will be lifted and you will be ready to go for next semester! Do keep in mind that if you fail to complete one (or both) advising procedures your bar will NOT be lifted and you will not be able to register for classes until the very last registration day, after all other students have already completed their registration. So be sure to complete both advising procedures before your registration time comes!!
