Qualifying Exam
Students must complete the core courses and not receive any grades of B or lower, and maintain an overall 3.0 minimum GPA. In addition, students must prepare an NSF or NIH style proposal on the research topic written by the student independently, presented orally and defended in front of the PhD committee by the end of the second year.
Teaching Assistant (TA) Requirements
All PhD students are expected to TA two long semesters during their tenure at UT. We recommend that students serve sometime in their first and third years, but the timing of this service will depend on the needs of the department and the advice of the student's research supervisor.
